Photos: How do I transfer Google Photos from my Carthage account to personal Gmail?

Answer

How do I transfer Google Photos from my Carthage account to my personal Gmail?

  1. Check if you have content in Google Photos using the instructions below. If not, no need to take any action at this time.
  2. Check if your Google Photos app on your smartphone is automatically set to connect to your Carthage account and redirect it to a personal Gmail account instead. See https://carthage.libanswers.com/faq/380886
  3. Export and/or Download any photos you want to save to a personal Gmail account or to your computer. This is not quick or straightforward, but some methods are shown here: https://support.google.com/photos/answer/7652919?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop
  4. DELETE the photos from your Carthage account: Login, click the “waffle/Rubik’s cube” icon at the upper right, and select Photos from the apps listed.  Then highlight the photos to be deleted and click the Trash icon at the top of the screen.  There is no known way to “select all” or select large numbers at once other than shift-clicking batches.

How do I know if I have content in Google Photos?

You may not be aware you are currently using Google Photos storage as smartphones can automatically back up their photos and videos to Google Photos when you sign in to your Carthage Google account on your personal mobile devices. We encourage everyone to make checking and removing your photos a priority so they are not lost.

To see if you have Google Photos stored, log in to your Carthage email, then click the “waffle” (Rubik’s cube) icon at the upper right and click on the Photos icon in the drop-down.  If you see photos there, then you have stored photos that you need to delete.  If Google is inviting you to add photos, then you have none and need to do nothing!

Other Considerations

  1. Make sure your phone isn't connected to your carthage.edu account. Here are instructions: https://carthage.libanswers.com/faq/380886
  2. Not sure if Google Takeout will export your photos to a personal Gmail, but it WILL export your Gmail and Google Drive. Here are instructions for that: https://carthage.libanswers.com/faq/361722
  3. The BEST way to export your photos is to download them to a computer.  Here are instructions for that: https://support.google.com/photos/answer/7652919?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop and another possibly helpful link: https://sites.google.com/site/picasaresources/google-photos-1/how-to-download-all-autobackupped-pictures
