How do I export the content of my Carthage Google Apps to a personal account?

Answer

You may copy the contents of your Carthage Gmail or Google Drive account to your personal Google account through a process called Google Takeout.

NOTES:

  • Different Google content needs to be transferred in specific ways. Please make sure you know how to copy various things, and make sure to check when you are done that you have the content that you need.
  • Make sure that the personal Gmail account you have is LARGE ENOUGH to hold all of your content. A free Gmail account has a quota of 15GB.  If you run out of space in the destination account, your transfer will fail midway through, and you will need to purchase more space and start again.
  • Documents shared with you aren't automatically included in this transfer. Make sure to make copies to add the files that have been shared with you to your Google Drive if you want to keep them..
  • When your files are finished copying, you will get an email at your Gmail address.

FOR GMAIL AND GOOGLE DRIVE ONLY

  1. This is the easiest way to copy the content of your Google Drive and Gmail. This will not copy your Contacts, Photos, YouTube, Sites, etc.
  2. Log in to your Carthage Gmail account.
  3. In that same browser, go to this Google webpage to begin the Google Takeout process (copying your content).
  4. Click "Send Code." Check your personal Gmail account for the code.
  5. On the transfer form in your Carthage account's browser, enter the code, then choose "Verify your destination."
  6. Select the content to copy and select "Start transfer."

FOR OTHER GOOGLE APPS (CONTACTS, PHOTOS, CALENDAR, ETC.)

  1. Log in to your Carthage Gmail account
  2. In that same browser, go to https://takeout.google.com
  3. Since there is a LONG list of items you probably don't use, you can click the "Deselect all" link at the upper right.
  4. Click the Next Step button at the bottom of the list. In the next step, you determine how you want to save or export the archive, what format, how often, and in how large of chunks. The default will send you the download link via email.
  5. Once you get the .zip file, you will need to look inside it for the contents you want. For example, if you download a calendar, it will be a .ics file inside of the .zip file. Extract it or copy it to another location, then use the Import Calendar feature in Google Calendar for your personal Gmail to import the events.
