How do I get the permalink for my e-textbook?

My textbook is available as an ebook through the library (Ebsco ebooks). How do I get the sharable link to give to my students and/or post in Schoology?

Answer

A permalink is a link that is intended to remain unchanged for a long period of time. To get the sharable permalink for an ebook through Carthage's library system, do the following:

  1. Go to the library research guides at https://libguides.carthage.edu.
  2. On the right, in the Electronic Resources box, click "All Electronic Resources."
  3. Click the "E" link or scroll down to the "E" section.
  4. Click the item ebook Collection (Ebscohost) - (NOT the one with "Academic" in the name).
  5. If you are off-campus, you will be prompted to log in; use your usual Carthage username and password.
  6. Type a few keywords from your book title into the search box (e.g. Teaching Learning Art Education) and click the "Search" button.
  7. Locate your book in the results list, and click on the title. (If you can't find it, try fewer keywords. If that doesn't work, contact the library to make sure we actually have it. Only specific books are available as ebooks through Ebsco.)
  8. In the Tools list on the right side of the screen, click the bottom option "Permalink." That will display the permalink in a box above the book title.
  9. Highlight the long link in the permalink box. Press Ctrl-C (or Cmd-C) or right-click and Copy to copy the link.
  10. Go to Schoology or email or whatever means you want to share the link and paste it there.

After a period of time after the library purchases/licenses your book, it will be searchable in the library catalog and you can also get the permalink there, but if the book is newly purchased, the above is the quickest way to get the link.
