How do I verify if a link in an email is safe?

Answer

You may use Google Transparency Report or Norton Safeweb (or a similar site) to check to see if a link is safe before clicking on it in your email.

  • In your email, right-click on the link in question.
  • Choose "Copy link address" from the menu.
  • Open a new tab in your browser window.
    • On macOS: Command-T keyboard shortcut.
    • On Windows: Control-T keyboard shortcut.
  • Go to either Google Transparency Report or Norton Safeweb.
  • Paste the link into either the Google Transparency Report or Norton Safeweb search box.
    • On macOS: Command-V keyboard shortcut.
    • On Windows: Control-V shortcut.

Example of a link pasted into Google Transparency Report:

  • Below is the long link that you copied from your email and pasted into Google Transparency Report.

  • Modify the link to show only the core domain (in this case, em.druva.com). To do so you need to remove the Proofpoint URL if you are in your Carthage email, which is https://urldefense.com/v3/, and also remove any characters after the primary domain (ending in .com).

  • Hit enter to submit, and Google Transparency Report or Norton Safeweb will provide feedback on whether the site appears safe.
