How do I print to PaperCut on my Mac?

Answer

To properly print to PaperCut from a Mac, you need to have NoMAD set up properly, remove all traces of UniFLOW (Carthage's previous universal printing solution), and then properly install and setup the PaperCut printing client and black & white printer.

Mac users are only able to directly print in black & white. Mac users cannot directly print color print jobs, even if you attempt to set up & print to the College's color print queues. To print something in color to Papercut, use the web portal: WebPrint

Install & Configure the PaperCut Print Client

  1. Connect to the PaperCut server by opening a Finder window, then either use the keyboard shortcut Command-K or Go menu → Connect to Server...
  2. Type smb://papercut-app/pcclient & click the Connect button.
  3. Open the mac folder.
  4. Select & copy PCClient.
  5. Go to the Applications folder, either by using the keyboard shortcut Command-Shift-A or Go menu → Applications.
  6. Paste PCClient in the Applications folder.
  7. Right-click or Control-click on PCClient → Select Show Package Contents.
  8. Open the Contents folder.
  9. Open the Resources folder.
  10. Open a Terminal window, either with Spotlight (Command-Space, by default) or by navigating to /Applications/Utilities & double-clicking Terminal.
  11. Type the following, then hit enter/return, providing your Mac password when prompted: sudo chmod +x /Applications/PCClient.app/Contents/Resources/set-permissions.command
  12. Type the following, then hit enter/return, providing your Mac password when prompted: sudo chmod +x /Applications/PCClient.app/Contents/Resources/install-login-hook.command
  13. Type the following, then hit enter/return, providing your Mac password when prompted: sudo chmod +x /Applications/PCClient.app/Contents/Resources/pc-client-mac.command
  14. Go back to your Finder window, & double-click set-permissions.command to run it. It will open in a Terminal window. Provide your Mac password when prompted.
  15. Double-click install-login-hook.command to run it. It will open in a Terminal window.
    1. You will be prompted to prevent the user from quitting the client. Type "no", then hit enter.
    2. Provide your Mac password when prompted.
  16. Double-click pc-client-mac.command to run it. It will open in a Terminal window.
    1. When you get the following error, use the keyboard command Control-C to kill the process, otherwise it will never exit: com.apple.macos.useScreenMenuBar has been deprecated. Please switch to apple.laf.useScreenMenuBar
  17. The PaperCut client ("PCClient") should have launched. If not:
    1. Go to the Applications.
    2. Scroll down to PCClient.
    3. Either Right-Click or Control-ClickOpen.
    4. If it launches, good. If it warns you that this is from an unidentified, click Okay to launch it anyway.

Install & Configure the PaperCut Printer

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Go to Printers & Scanners.
  3. Click the + symbol at the bottom of the Printers list.
  4. Right-click or Control-Click the blank space in the toolbar next to the Search box → Click Customize Toolbar....
  5. Drag the Advanced gear icon onto the toolbar, then click the Done button.
  6. Click the Advanced gear icon in the toolbar to switch to the Advanced tab.
  7. Wait a moment for the "Searching for Printers..." spinner to complete.
  8. Click the dropdown menu next to Type: & select Windows printer via spoolss
  9. Fill in the following, then click the Add button:
    • Device: Another Device (the default)
    • URL: smb://papercut-app/carthageprint (Note: NOT carthageprint-public!)
    • Name: Carthage Print (Black & White)
    • Location: (Leave blank)
    • Use: Generic PCL Printer
  10. After you click the Add button, it asks if you want to use the duplexer. Check the Duplexer box then click the OK button; this will let you print double-sided.
  11. On the Printers & Scanners preference pane, click the Default printer: dropdown menu and select Carthage Print (Black & White).

Test Print

  1. Open a blank document in Word, TextEdit, etc.
  2. Print it to the Carthage Print (Black & White) printer.
  3. A print queue window will pop up briefly. If all goes well, this will disappear.
  4. If you have access to multiple print cost centers (e.g., you work in multiple departments), you should get a PaperCut prompt asking which cost center to charge the job. Otherwise, you'll see nothing.
  5. Go log in to one of the printers to make sure the documents actually got through to your queue.

You're done! If you have an issue with a printer, email printing@help.carthage.edu & describe the issue you're experiencing.
