Frequently Asked Questions

All physical and electronic items owned by the Hedberg Library are searchable through our catalog, powered by OCLC's WorldCat.

Finding a physical item the Carthage library owns:

Note: these directions are to find a specific item, not to search by topics.

• Start out at the Hedberg Library homepage.
• Type in the title or author of the item you are looking for and click "Go."
  • You may also click on “Advanced Search," which provides more options to bring back a more focused search.
• All of the items Carthage owns related to your search will appear FIRST on the results page.
• Click on the specific item you are looking for.
• Depending on the type of resource you are looking for, check the availability of the resource under
  • "Find a copy online" to access an electronic version of the text.
  • "Find a copy in the library" to access a physical copy of the text in the library.
• If the item is marked as "Available" under the status of the library copy, note the call number. 
• Ask for help at the Hedberg Library Information Desk to find where the shelf is in the library (it can be confusing).

What if Carthage does not own the specific item you want?  Get it through Interlibrary Loan!

• If we do not own the item, under “Libraries That Own This Item” it will read: "WorldCat Libraries."
• Click on the title of the item.
• Clicking on the item title will take you into the item record where you can request it via Interlibrary Loan.
• Scroll down until you see the blue button labeled “Request through Interlibrary Loan,” as shown below.
• Enter your Carthage username and password.
• If this is your first time in our Interlibrary Loan system (called ILLIAD), the first screen will ask you to fill out personal information.
• Once you submit your personal information, the next screen will be a form already filled out with the item you want.
• Check that the information is correct and then click “Submit” at the bottom of the screen.
• ILL requests can take up to a week and you will get an email when your item has arrived.
