How do I connect to the Carthage-Secure network on a Windows device?

Answer

  1. Make sure your wifi is on.
  2. Two SSIDs are available on campus. Carthage-Open and Carthage-Secure. Choose Carthage-Secure.
  3. You will be prompted by Windows to authenticate to the network. You will authenticate using your Carthage username and password) NOT your Windows credentials.
  4. If this is your first time connecting to Carthage-Secure you will be shown an alert -- this is not an error. Choose the "Connect" option.
  5. You should now be connected to the network and able to surf the web. Connecting to Carthage-Secure automatically registers your machine on the network for 365 days.

To access Carthage-Secure when the connection is not made automatically (as above), follow the steps below.

  • Forget the current Carthage-Secure connection your computer knows about as we need to re-add it and change some of the default settings.  Methods for doing so will vary between different releases of Windows.
  • Go into the Network and Sharing Center via the Control Panel and choose “Manually connect to a wireless network.”
  • Add a new Carthage-Secure connection with the following settings:
    • Network name: Carthage-Secure
    • Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
    • Encryption type: AES
    • Security Key:
      • Check the box next to "Start this connection automatically."
      • Check the box next to "Connect even if th network is not broadcasting."
  • If by the end of these instructions you are still unable to connect, start over and try setting "Security type" to "802.1x" instead of "WPA2-Enterprise."
  • Click "Next" and choose "Change connection settings."
  • On the next screen, click the "Security" tab, then the "Settings" button.
  • In the setting screen, scroll through the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities until you get to "GeoTrust Global CA." Check this box and click the "Configure" button below.
  • On the next screen, make sure the check box next to "Automatically use my windows logon name and password (and domain if any)" is unchecked.

Click "Ok" on all screens to save your new configuration and try connection to Carthage-Secure. If you see the alert below, click "Connect." Enter your Carthage credentials when prompted for a username and password.
